Amanda Chua

Language is one of my strongest suite. I have taken an interest in both public speaking and academic writing since secondary school. To nurture my confidence in speaking in front of a crowd, I joined the debate club in secondary. Surprisingly, I acquired note-taking skills, internet research skills, basic adjudication skills and argumentative skills. I came to realize that debating was more than public speaking, and that I am perhaps not cut out for debating. On hindsight, I discovered that I am more suited for writing. In 2017, I participated in the annual Commonwealth Essay Competition and unexpectedly attained Silver award. Additionally, my History and Literature essays were occasionally selected as model essays. 

In Junior College, I took H2 English Language and Linguistics to deepen my understanding of the English language. The subject has given me the opportunity to appreciate the English Language and it's relevance to our daily lives. In a section of one of the papers, we have to write an adaptation using given texts. The genre of the adaptation could be anything from a brochure or pamphlet to a press release to a magazine article. I find this particularly intriguing as it allows me to exercise creativity while fulfilling the task's purpose. 

As someone who values harmony, I enjoy working in a team. In my first year of junior college, I took on the role of being a project manager for our H1 'A' Level Project Work. While we all had very different ideas and opinions on the specific topic to work on, I believed in compromising and reaching a common consensus. I also took great tact in communicating my honest opinions to my group members. 

As a highly disciplined individual, I often turn in assignments early and with high quality. While it is important to be talented, I believe that it is equally important to be disciplined in order to make progress in any assignment or project. Coupled with my analytical nature, I am capable of generating critical questions that can steer others in the right direction when working on a particular assignment or project.

I have worked at Venture Corporation as a product tester and at Guardian Warehouse as a packer.

I took H2 Economics, H2 Mathematics, H2 English Language and Linguistics and H1 Literature at Catholic Junior College. I completed my ‘A’ Level in 2022.
