As an aspiring physiotherapist, I am constantly searching for dreams that I can fulfill, the education that I can embark on to help me reach the stars and do somersaults on the moon. For now, all I know is that I love the joy, fulfillment that I can attain from doing volunteering and constantly acquiring new knowledge on physiotherapy. All the activities and projects I embarked on have brought forth enriching and powerful experiences.
From being a musician in a band, to taking up leadership roles in the band co-curricular activity (CCA), to juggling my school schedule, internships at the hospitals and polyclinics, volunteering work, and part time jobs, I have come to the realization that all these challenges have groomed me to be an independent, resilient, highly driven person and a multi-tasker! Through my leadership roles as a member of the executive committee (EXCO) team and the section leader (SL) of the saxophone section, I have honed my skills in leadership, teamwork and time-management. My involvement in volunteering work like the “YOLDEN” program has exposed me to the intriguing world of geriatric rehabilitation physiotherapy. Working at RapidPhysiocare clinic offered me opportunities to interact with the physiotherapists and observe how they work with patients. It also gave me a glimpse into the various aspects of physiotherapy that I had no prior exposure to. I understand that being a physiotherapist is a physically and mentally tiring job, but even more so rewarding. All these experiences have also revealed to me my PASSION – being an Allied Health professional as a Physiotherapist!
Most importantly, my pursue physiotherapy as a profession stemmed from my interest in the study of the anatomy and biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system; and seeing how my loved ones recover their motor functions and maintain their quality of life through physiotherapy. After being exposed to the topic of anatomy and physiology in my diploma course, I have been immersed in the subject ever since. One of the many things that I like about anatomy and physiology is that I can learn about the theory on the various parts of the human body, coupled to learning its practical functionality as well. The complexity of the human body is mind-boggling, and ever so spectacular. I can hardly contain myexcitement to study more on this subject, along with the other aspects of physiotherapy. Moreover, I admire how physiotherapists can help people who have impaired bodily functions, to speed up recovery from their injury and get back on their feet. I was especially grateful to the physiotherapists that helped my grandmother be able to walk after her knee replacement surgery, and my cousin to be able to recover from stroke. I have seen so much dedication, compassion, and patience from the physiotherapists when they worked with my grandma and cousin. It is truly heart-warming and motivating.
With the qualities I have, coupled with my passion for helping people and my good foundation in physiotherapy concepts through my education at SIT, I am confident that I am prepared for the hard work and challenges that I will face if I am offered this precious opportunity as a therapist assistant.
