Patrick McElroy

I am a dedicated designer with an interest in visual storytelling. I have 5 years of professional experience and have gone on to attain a BA(Hons) and Masters with Distinction at Sheffield School of Architecture. The school’s focus on community engagement and publicly sensitive architecture has led me to a professional career where I have continued to contribute towards designs and buildings that enhance the built environment. I am consistent in my desire to further my knowledge of the profession and take on leadership and responsibility both within the practice and in a project environment.

My experience includes projects across education, research, healthcare and commercial sectors. I have had the opportunity to contribute on large, complex projects, requiring intricate and collaborative coordination with other professionals both locally and on an international scale. I am thoroughly committed to the design process and have extensive experience at early design stages in securing work and contributing to successful planning submissions.

I have significant experience at early stages of projects, working on competition bids and feasibility studies for repeat clients, where efficiency and communication is key within a fast paced work environment. I am confident in using a combination of hand-drawing, detailed computer modelling and rendering to test ideas quickly to effectively communicate with the project team. I regularly tested design options in live rendering tools such as Enscape and utilised VR throughout the design process to inform decision making and manage design coordination in the Revit model which allowed for 3D understanding of clashes and areas that needed further development.

My education focused on collaborative design processes and climate response by weaving material narratives into an architectural response to address disassembly, material lifecycles and material decay. My joint thesis was chosen by the University to showcase methods of championing sustainable design and shortlisted for the RA’s Summer Show ‘Climate Emergency’. I have a passion for developing resilient and sustainable approaches to design for buildings and communities and in professional practice I have continued to apply these themes, working on the UK's first Net Zero Laboratory where I coordinated with sustainability consultants to incorporate systems for Biodiversity Net Gain, and TM54 processes to calculate embodied carbon at key design milestones in the project. To further my understanding I am currently undertaking the LEED Green Associate course.
