Having completed my research in Advanced plant pathology combined with a degree in Education, I took up teaching as my career. Having worked for more than five years in the education sector in diverse educational organisations including two international schools in Singapore, I believe I will have the skill sets and confidence to effectively mentor students to enable them

 

  1. To work collaboratively for a good cause

 

I believe that responsible citizenship is a must for the learners in order to create a global sustainable world where they can work together to eradicate poverty. Increase literacy and also involve in causes such as UNICEF ‘s mission to promote world peace , and literacy and in the Green Peace movement to care for the environment

 

 

To enable them to  think critically

 

I strongly believe that schools must provide the right environment for critical thinking

 

I can help them in this role by helping them to collate , analyse and synthesize and evaluate their learning so that their meta-cognitive skills are developed

 

As the adage goes “Mathematics is not only solving for x m but it also involves figuring out y (why ?”)

 

3.To enable them to have global exposure so that we realize each learner is unique and to enable the children to respect diversity in culture, beliefs , and create a world where everybody lives in peace

 

 

4. To ensure that adequate importance is given to digital citizenship

 

We live in a world where everybody has access to the internet and social media .As an educator , I will want to ensure that the children are aware of the dangers of the internet , how they can protect themselves from cyber bullying and also how to distinguish between fake news and real news

 

5.To realize that education goes beyond the class room and involves trans-disciplinary subjects

 

Today’s education is not only rigorously confined to the specific subject but it crosses borders and we see an increasing link between arts humanities and sciences , so that each major discipline can benefit from the other and inculcate a broader view and a holistic education which can integrate arts with the sciences and vice versa

 

 

 

6. To ensure that there are opportunities for bilingualism and multilingualism

 

I would help them connect across cultures, celebrating the diversity of cultures by hosting Friendship week ,United Nations Week , so that each learner can take away with him / her a slice of the culture which was hitherto new to him or her

 

 

7. to help them connect the lessons of the class room to the realities of life

 

 

8.To help students become well -informed of the choices that they make and aspire to be life long learners

 

 

9.To create a climate in which students are empowered to ask questions and seek answers

“Our challenge is to reconnect students to their natural curiosity “(-Baron Ester 1993.}

 

10.To help them realize education is a collaborative communal act

To help them understand that Fibonacci sequences can be found in arts and music and architecture and nature such as the sunflower petals as well as equally applicable to Math

            

                   11.To help them realize that they can be the architects of a future world where cleanliness and keeping the world’s oceans garbage free is as important as cleaning their homes

 

 

12.Modelling

An educator shapes the life of a learner . I believe this must be central to the idea of teaching, where in the educator sets guidelines and shows by exemplary methods and etiquette he /she has a role in shaping the future of a society as a whole .

 

As the saying goes “Instruction ends in the class room ,but education ends only when life ends “

 

Thus,  I believe that by adopting a student-centered approach , I can engage the students so that they realize their maximum potential and reach for the stars , where they once saw just the sky .
