Yazhini Ramaswamy

I am an enthusiastic biotechnologist, who loves to experience the thrill of learning new niches in the vast field of Biology. "Learning is a never-ending process "and we all have been new to something at some point in our life. How genes encode what we are fascinated me contributing to my research interest in the field of population genetics and epigenetics, with my current interest inclining toward the field of ophthalmological research, investigating the genetic background of eye disorders.I am also a budding genomic and transcriptomic data analyst with knowledge in the R language. I am a curious researcher interested in the field of skin health and aging effects. I believe that a constant motivation to learn and grow is more important than expertise. Other than my knowledge of DNA, RNA, and genes, I'm a passionate writer and a science communication aspirant. If we catch up for a coffee or meeting, I promise not to bore you with only science because I can indulge you in a poetry session and philosophical talk on human minds with the boost of caffeine :)

I am Yazhini, a Biotechnology master's graduate from NUS (highest distinction; CGPA 4.55/5.0), and have completed my course in 2022 December. I am also a permanent resident of Singapore. I am an eager biotechnologist, passionate to explore more into field of genetics of ophthalmological disorders, aspiring to become a successful scientist. I believe that this position will help me to grow and learn and explore the niche of my interest.

 I have working experience in population genetics and genomics projects on eye diseases.  I completed my bachelor's dissertation at the prestigious eye hospital and research Centre Sankaranethralaya in Chennai, India, and am currently receiving practical training there in large-scale PCR operations as well as in cell culture methods employing ND4 mutant cell MSCs. Parallelly, I am also engaging in genomic data analyses for datasets generated in the lab.

During my master's course I became familiar with genomic and transcriptomic data analysis using bioinformatics tools employing R language through the module I have picked up and also through my master's project at GIS, Singapore in the laboratory of Dr.Shyam Prabhakar.  During my internship at Dr.Shyam's lab , I extensively used Bioconductor packages for analyzing and visualizing large single-cell RNA sequencing datasets of PBMCs and colorectal cancer samples. Through the modules I chose, I also learned more about advanced molecular genetics and genomics. These modules not only gave me a plethora of knowledge on the most recent genetics research, but they also intensively trained me to write research proposals and analyze gaps in research articles, enhancing my scientific writing skills.

I have one publication on Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy (PCV) and Age Related Macular Degeneration  AMD from the project I worked on for my bachelor's degree (Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol; 2023, 261(4):1205-1212); co-first author). Along with the same  research team at Sankaranethralya, Chennai, I am currently producing a review on the "Gene Regulatory Network in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Diabetic Retinopathy. “
