    Roles & Responsibilities

    Job Description

    • The Sommelier has an extensive knowledge of wine.
    • He/She is responsible for advising and recommending to patrons according to their personal wine needs, i.e taste, food and wine pairing, the occasion or the budget.
    • He/She is also responsible for selecting wines, creating drink lists and managing stock.
    • He/She builds and maintains the wine list according to the needs of the establishment.
    • He/She is also responsible for training on wine and other beverages by conducting wine tastings.
    • Administer purchasing and receiving procedures.
    • Analyse alcoholic beverage business.
    • Analyse service quality and customer satisfaction.
    • Develop and motivate team members through capability development.
    • Identify and establish internal and external stakeholder relationships.
    • Implement loss/risk prevention.
    • Lead team to implement change.
    • Manage and implement business continuity plans.
    • Manage compliance with food and beverage hygiene policies and procedures.
    • Manage cost and quality controls.
    • Manage crisis situations.
    • Manage guest service.
    • Manage training.
    • Manage wine business.
    • Prepare and serve wine.
    • Understand new and old world wine producing countries.
    • Understand sparkling, sweet and fortified wines.
    • Understand viticulture, vinification and wine packaging.

    Qualifications:

    • Certification as a sommelier or a degree in hospitality is beneficial.
    • Previous experience as a sommelier, wine steward, or in a hospitality role.
    • Extensive knowledge on wines and regions of the different types.
    • Knowledge of vineyards and wineries.
    • An understanding of the wine making process.
