    About us

Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a motivated and dynamic Lead Research Scientist (Modelling Engineer) in the Energy Storage team within Dyson's Research, Design and Development (RDD) department.

The technical research team aims to exploit this knowledge to design state-of-the-art products allowing us to differentiate our products from the competition. Dyson is expanding into several new and exciting product categories and is positioning itself as a technology company. Successful applicants for this role will form a critical part of the team driving these products and others forward.

Dyson has state-of-the-art R&D laboratory facilities to support the development and testing of novel battery designs. Continued expansion of our activities has created an exciting opportunity within the team for an individual who is keen to get hands on with the development of the next generation of batteries.

    About the role

You will join a team of electrochemists, mechanical, electronic, and modelling engineers in Dyson's Energy Storage Research group. Your focus will be on the development of models capable of accurately simulating Dyson's novel cell designs. In this role, you will have the opportunity to influence Dyson's cell design strategy. You will:

  • Gain a clear understanding of Dyson's Energy storage requirements and apply your knowledge to develop custom cells, enabling the next generation of our products.
  • Use a combination of practical experience, modelling and theoretical knowledge to optimise cell design and prototyping.
  • Work with a team that scales electrode designs from small scale batches to prototype cells. Use your understanding of material science and electrochemical characterisation to analyse experimental data, which can be fed into the model.
  • Act as an authority on modelling, responsible for developing robust mathematical models capable of predicting complex cell behaviours which capture electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical mechanism.
  • Collaborate with Energy Storage and Product teams through the phases of creation, development, validation, and optimisation of these multiphysics-based cell models.
  • About you

  • Masters or PhD/EngD level degree in a physical science or engineering discipline relevant to electrochemical cell research and development.
  • Track record in the development of models used for simulating lithium-ion cell performance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of critical battery materials, including key trends and developments.
  • Ability to use MATLAB/Python for data-processing automation.
  • Experience of modelling cell performance from fundamental electrode/material properties using dedicated software such as Ansys, COMSOL, etc.
  • Demonstrable leadership of projects/teams to drive performance and quality improvement.
  • Experience of working with scientists and engineers from different backgrounds, including stakeholder management.
  • Relevant industrial experience.
  • Desirable experience:

  • Robust knowledge of material and electrode characterisation, including particle size distribution, SEM, BET, DSC/TGA, XRD, porosimetry, ionic and electronic conductivity analysis and electrode expansion.
  • Experience of failure mode analysis of cells and the constituent components.
  • Essential behavioural skills:

  • Collaboration. Proactively collaborates across teams and functions to solve problems. Works effectively across boundaries and geographies.
  • Teamwork. Team player, both in operating within the immediate team, the global energy storage team, and the broader Dyson team.
  • Initiative. A self-starter, who understands the broad team mission and objectives. Quickly turning an individual contribution into a broader success for the team.
  • Flexibility. Able to adapt to the constantly changing environment that is inherent in this disruptive technology driven company.
  • Business alignment. Aligns contribution with the commercial objectives of the business, as well as aligning with the technology driven objectives.
  • Process driven approach. Implements and maintains effective and efficient processes.
