The APAC Senior Legal Counsel is responsible for delivering effective and efficient technical support on legal and compliance matters in respect of the (re)insurance operations of the P&C and Life business units in APAC, and more broadly on a global basis.

They also will be expected to support on corporate and transactional projects in APAC, as needed.


The APAC Senior Legal Counsel will work closely with the APAC General Counsel and respective P&C and Life Chief Legal Counsels to understand and respond to the commercial and business-related constraints and pressures on the business functions.

**Key duties and responsibilities

1. Legal Matters

  • Support the operations of the P&C and Life business units, including identifying and addressing/mitigating legal risks in the business and support the business by appropriately addressing any legal and compliance risk and developing processes to respond to them for the commercial and legal progression of the relevant business.
  • Provide support on an APAC (and as needed on a global) basis in relation to the drafting and negotiation of a wide spectrum of legal, commercial and technical (re)insurance contracts, including keeping apprised of wording developments in other jurisdictions.
  • Providing day to day legal advice, guidance, and support to the business in relation to any other legal, commercial, claims and financial matters.
  • Participating in Group, APAC, and P&C and Life business unit projects including developing strategy, drafting applicable documents, liaising with both the internal clients and external advisors and project managing process. Independently research and investigate legal issues, draft, prepare, file organise and distribute legal documents.

2. Compliance

  • Advise on legal and (re)insurance business conduct compliancerelated matters and support the Group Compliance Officer, the APAC General Counsel and APAC Compliance Officer with the implementation of Group, business unit and local approved governance and legal compliance policies, guidelines and procedures and provide training on such matters, as required.
  • Provide advice, assessment, guidance, and support on legal and business conduct compliancerelated matters of the (re)insurance business activities, including (re)insurance regulatory issues (as may be requested), sanctions and embargoes, antimoney laundering & terrorism financing, antibribery, antifraud, conflicts of interest, data protection and privacy, antitrust and competition, reputational risks and ethics. Provide business compliance training, referrals and tools with respect to the (re)insurance business activities of the business units.

3. Corporate and general legal matters

  • Support with ad hoc corporate legal advice as may be requested from time to time Provide support and advice on general legal matters (including real estate, general service agreements and other non(re)insurance activities) to the APAC operations.

4. Reporting

  • The APAC Senior Legal Counsel reports directly to the APAC General Counsel.
  • The APAC Senior Legal Counsel will work closely in support of the respective P&C and Life Chief Legal Counsels.

Experience & Competencies

  • At least 5 years PQE either in a legal practice and/or commercial environment, with a material exposure to the (re)insurance business.
  • Degree (ideally law), with a strong academic record and a formal legal qualification.
  • A track record of having the ability to accurately assess the degree of legal risk and opportunity in a given situation and the ability to develop solutions to mitigate legal risk.
  • Experience in influencing and motivating others.
