    Roles & Responsibilities

    [What the role is]

The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) is a division of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). At CCRS, our mission is to advance scientific understanding of tropical climate variability and change and its associated weather systems affecting Singapore and the wider Southeast Asia region, so that the knowledge and expertise can benefit decision makers and the community. Our vision is to be a world leading centre in tropical climate and weather research focusing on the Southeast Asia region.

Located within CCRS's Department of Climate Research (DCR), the Climate Projections and Extremes (CPE) Branch focuses its research on two key priority areas that have been developed in consultation with Singapore stakeholder agencies: (a) the development of regional/local climate change projections based on CMIP6 and in future on CMIP7; and (b) enhancing our understanding on regional tropical processes relevant in driving local climate variability and change. Together, these research efforts will support Singapore stakeholders' planning and decision-making processes on climate change adaptation.

We are seeking an experienced ocean scientist with a strong background in oceanography or a related discipline to join the CPE Branch to contribute to a better understanding of regional ocean dynamics (including sea level rise and variability), especially future ocean projections.

[What you will be working on]

    • Lead and carry out research related to the application of ocean models in climate change applications, especially using the NEMO ocean model.
    • Advance understanding of regional ocean dynamics in Southeast Asia and around Singapore, including processes contributing to sea level rise.
    • Running regional ocean downscaling simulations using the NEMO ocean model based on the latest CMIP models.
    • Establish relationships with international experts in the area of regional ocean dynamics and application of ocean models in climate change applications in order to support and complement research projects undertaken locally.
    • Lead the application of ocean models in climate change research within CCRS.
    • Contribute to the communication of research to stakeholders.
    • Contribute to the development of research plans and strategies.
    • Contribute to the mentoring of junior scientists within the team; and
    • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed publications and present findings at international meetings.

    [What we are looking for]

The job might be for you if you possess the following:

    • A PhD in a relevant physical science such as oceanography, meteorology, mathematics, or physics
    • At least 5 years post graduate research experience and a recognised expert in their field
    • A good understanding of the complexity of regional ocean dynamics
    • Experience in the application of ocean models e.g. NEMO, ROMS in climate change applications.
    • Demonstrate ability to undertake research work both individually and as part of a team.
    • Proven record of success as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals; and
    • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal and across technical and non-technical materials.
    • As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment.
