UWCSEA East is looking for Costume Technicians [IEC] to join our theatre production team. Reporting to the Theatre Technical Manager.


Main Responsibilities

  • Construct costumes based on costume designer's sketches, patterns, or instructions. Sew, stitch, and tailor costumes to fit actors and performers. Assemble and alter costumes as needed to accommodate various scenes and changes.
  • Assist costume designer in sourcing for fabrics and materials required for construction. Work with suppliers, shop for fabrics, and negotiate prices to stay within budget while meeting the costume designer's specifications.
  • Assist with costume fittings for actors to ensure proper fit and comfort. Make necessary adjustments to costumes based on feedback from fittings.
  • Repair and maintain costumes throughout the production to ensure they remain in good condition. Launder, press, and clean costumes as required, following care instructions.
  • Ensure that costumes meet safety standards and guidelines, especially regarding fireresistant materials when necessary. Comply with health and safety regulations in the workplace.
  • Troubleshoot costumerelated issues during rehearsals and performances. Provide quick solutions to costume emergencies.
  • Assist actors in changing costumes efficiently and quickly during performances and rehearsals. Ensure that costume changes are smooth and do not disrupt the flow of the production.
  • Inspect costumes before and after each use to identify any damage or needed repairs. Make minor costume repairs or adjustments as needed to ensure costumes are in top condition.
  • Handle quick costume changes, such as those required during fastpaced scenes or musical numbers. Be prepared to assist actors with challenging or elaborate costume changes.
  • Anticipate and prepare for costume emergencies, such as wardrobe malfunctions or unexpected costume damage. Have backup costumes or repair kits readily available.

Person Specifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent; formal education in costume design or a related field is a plus.
  • Previous experience as a costume dresser in a theatre, film, television, or live performance environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of costume construction, fabrics, and costumerelated terminology.
  • Excellent organisational and timemanagement skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate production schedules.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift and carry costume pieces.
