The Charterer role

  • Arrange charters for all product and/or crude import and export, backhaul and trading shipments including spot and time charters to ensure that product is delivered safely, efficiently, reliably and cost effectively to Ampol's customers. Responsible for ship handling and related contract negotiation and administration, maintain international contacts with Ampol customers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Advise Ampol Trading on optimal freight solutions to support the trade book strategy.
  • Advise Ampol Trading on appropriate freight exposure management options in line with the trade book strategy.
  • Provide longer freight outlooks to the wider Ampol group
  • Supporting fuels and infrastructure project feasibility assessments.
  • B2B pricing freight inputs.
  • Aviation Tenders freight inputs.
  • Other freight inputs as requested.
  • Build and leverage external relationships to deliver competitive freight solutions both through discounted rates and alternative pricing options.
  • Develop relationships with key counterparties to deliver longer term freight solutions such as time charter and/or CoA.
  • Provide cover for the Chartering Manager supporting the chartering team, attending trading meetings, providing market reports.
  • Provide oversight to all operational and relevant financial aspects of the freight transactions to support incident free transportation of Ampol's cargoes, and accurate and timely financial payments, including consideration of operational and financial constraints.
  • Coordinate shipping activity and freight advice in order to deliver products, crude and feedstocks for CAPPL, and other thirdparty agreements.
To give you an idea of what this role involves, you will:

  • Organise shipping for all Ampol voyages with third parties to ensure vessel meets vetting requirements, is nominated in a timely manner to meet required laycans, is provided with complete and correct instructions and chartered at market competitive rates.
  • Evaluate shipping economics and potential impacts, including short and long term reviews, in order to support decision making around Ampol product, crude and feedstocks purchases and sales, and to provide advice to the wider Ampol organisation relating to freight including for margin forecasting and marketing sales.
  • Negotiate spot fixtures, contracts of affreightment and short time charters with counterparties, and optimise the overall shipping program to achieve optimal returns for Ampol group.
  • Optimise Ampol Time Charter vessels using both Ampol programmed cargoes and external third party cargoes where appropriate.
  • Provide recommendations to the Chartering Manager on evaluation of viable possible longterm business opportunities relating to shipping and trading based on monitoring of market trends, including time chartering and outchartering.
  • Maintain strong and professional working relationships with key industry participants, including ship owners and brokers, and proactively identify customer needs and expectations through effective relationship management.
  • Build strong working relationships with Ampol group network to identify and capture optimisation opportunities to deliver value to the business.
  • Work closely with Ampol Traders, other Charterers, Ampol Operations, Supply Operations and other stakeholders to understand and optimise vessel fixtures and flexibility in the supply chain, including review of disport and backhaul options, coastal shipping, and effective utilisation of all vessel fixtures.
  • Provide commercial advice and support for the Ampol Operations team in the demurrage claim process, and any other issues with vessel fixtures, including interactions with 3rd parties.
  • Capture and manage the freight related transactions in Ampol systems, including allocation of time charters.
  • Identify, implement and monitor continuous improvement opportunities.
