About Cliff Tan:
Cliff is an experienced musician and teacher, having over 10 years of experience in teaching music both independently and under the Ministry of Education. He has played as a solo pianist with the Singapore Wind Symphony and has worked with world-renown musicians as both a pianist and a composer. He draws on his experience in classical piano, electric guitar, sound engineering, music production, as well as composition to bring a multidisciplinary approach to his teaching methods.
Complementing his skill at the Piano, Cliff has also had experience teaching Guitar, Music Theory, Music Mixing & Production, as well as composition. His past students having professional musical careers in the industry.
As a composer, he has studied with Prof. Ho Chee Kong, Dr Peter Edwards, Martin Jaggi, and Adeline Wong. His versatility is showcased by the range of works he has produced; with his work being featured by independent games companies and his contemporary/classical pieces having been premiered by internationally renowned musicians such as the Saxophone Duo Landman/Stadler, the Mondrian Ensemble Basel, OpusNovus, Max Reifer and Joost Flach amongst others.
His recent orchestra piece Kopi(2021) has been chosen to be performed at the Soundbridge Contemporary Music Festival 2021 alongside works by John Adams and George Crumb. He also works with the NUS School of Computing and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music as a composer and Research Assistant with Professor Kat Agres on an Automatic Music Generation System for a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). To this end, he is currently the coinventor and composer for the rule-based system. The system is currently undergoing trials at government medical facilities to potentially treat stroke victims and patients with mental afflictions.
As a pianist, Cliff has achieved the position of Piano Artist Semi-finalist in the National Piano and Violin Competition 2019. He has also worked as a pianist with the Singapore Wind Symphony (2018), Singapore Polytechnic Jazz band (2013-2015), Yong Siew Toh Trombone studio (2020), and piano concerto soloist for Tri-Polytechnic Piano Ensemble (2013-2016), Singapore Polytechnic String Ensemble (2014), amongst others.
His playing style is not limited to any single genre, and he has performed as a piano accompanist at various competitions such as the Singapore Chinese Music Competition with a Dizi (2019 - 2020), and NAFA Concerto Competition with a Guzheng (2019 - 2020).
In his many years in the industry, he has had the fortune to have worked with prominent musical figures such as Dieter Mack, Robert Sirota, Apo Hsu, Adrian Tan, Martin Jaggi, Dr John Sharpley, Joost Flach, and Clarence Lee.
He strives to bring out the potential of every student by helping them discover music in their own unique way. Having worked with prominent professional musicians and producers, as well as having extensive experience as a music teacher, Cliff draws on his experience to enable his students to develop in the best way possible.
