About matthew lam:

I'm currently holding a position as Lifeguard1(team lead)  in my company.

I have been involved in water work for most of my life, starting from a waterpolo player in the National Youth Team to coaching swimming to doing beach patrol at Sentosa and being a lifeguard at Singapore Sports Council.

I also possess certifications such as 'Pool Lifeguard Award' from SLSS and a valid first aid, CPR and AED.

Experience

I hope there is an open position in the company. I am very keen to take on this role and believe my background and working experiences will enable me to excel in its undertakings. I have 3 years of working experience in the retail sector, I worked 8 years in an outdoor environment as a Beach Patrol life saving rescue supervisor, 7 years in Singapore Sports Council taking on a lead role, 8 years as a swimming instructor and 10 years working as a computer engineer. I was given opportunities to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds and ages thus allowing me to grasp the skill of persuade and command; and I have become an attentive listener.

Being self motivated, I excelled in bringing sales to the companies I work for and have become very creative in marketing ideas. Being employed at one of the most popular tourist attraction in Singapore, my wide range of responsibilities has enabled me to take on simultaneous jobs and perform under high stress.

Sentosa is a popular location for major events like “Zouk Out”, “International Sandcastle Competition”, ‘New Year’s Day Count -Down Party’, ‘Family Day’ and many more. It is not unusual for these events to be held on the same day; therefore attracting large crowds and; mischief makers are aplenty. Working at these large management functions has instilled in me a strong sense of anticipation of impending danger and, an acute observation are integral in the prevention of fatal accidents. Lagoons and beach patrol were my priority. Lagoons in Sentosa teems with wild life and many a times, sharks, sting ray, jellyfish, stone fish and many others are a common sight. Being observant has become my second nature where marine life is concerned as stings from these animals can have painful and sometimes fatal consequences. With bars and clubs littered along its shoreline, this little gem of Singapore is renowned for its all-day beach parties. Drunken guests are not uncommon and amidst topless and bikini-clad ladies, cases of indecent harassment are inevitable. Having worked in events held during day time and night, my team and I have done countless water rescues and we are always on the look-out for emergencies as we liaise with rangers when crimes are committed. All these have contributed to my vast knowledge and versatility on the usage of the latest first aid and water-rescue techniques and equipments.

As a team player and a supervisor, I understand that in order to carry out responsibilities effectively, my team and I would have to be physically and mentally strong and in an optimum condition. I have trained, encouraged and guided new staffs and part-timers in terms of physique strengthening and motivated them to have a positive attitude towards their responsibilities; thus building trust and respect from fellow colleagues. Combining water safety education and water activities have always appealed to me; and working with children is always a joy.

I have been involved in the National Water-Polo team since my youth and have since been advocating the advantages of swimming as a life skill and a form of exercise. Specializing in passing the skills of the sport to children between the ages of 4-11 and adults, I have developed a set of creative teaching method that helps the young and old alike to gain water confidence; thus quickly and accurately learning the different strokes and grooming them to be strong swimmers. Teaching has instilled patience in me and has allowed me to gain deep experience in the preparation, review and analysis of an individual’s strengths, weaknesses and character.

Technology and humans’ reliance on them has grown from strength to strength. Being a computer engineer, I have serviced individuals and companies on networking, IP phone and, software and hardware issues. As newer models of PC, laptops, servers, IP controller etc; and different needs of people change with time, being resourceful, knowledgeable and keeping up with the latest trend is of utmost importance. Most people rely on their smart phone, laptops and PCs for work and daily correspondence through e-mails, to ‘googling’ for just about anything under the sun. I understand my clients’ needs therefore; the delivery of quality services on a timely basis is my priority.

Constant interaction with people from diverse cultures, races and ages; and across all levels of events and situations has enables me to develop strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills. I thrive in an environment teeming with challenges and I am always keen to take on new ones and to learn and develop new skills. I believe my experiences, skills and personal character are suitable and relevant to the working environment at Safra National Service Association Singapore and to the role of a Senior Life-guard. I look forward to hearing from you.
