About Xin Ying Tan:
I am a fourth-year undergraduate and scholar majoring in Chemistry and Food Science at Nanyang Technological University and Wageningen University (Netherlands), graduating in May 2023. My double major program has equipped me with a good understanding of organic, physical and analytical chemistry, nutrition, food chemistry, microbiology, physics and food process engineering, a commercial mindset, and the ability to critically analyse scenarios and make informed decisions. I have recently completed my Final Year Project under Professor William Chen, valorising fish side-streams with fermentation to obtain highly nutritious fish protein hydrolysates. As a traditionally-trained illustrator and painter, I have also picked up digital illustrations. I was the main designer of the Nanyang Arts Festival publicity and publications main committee and have helped my clients design collaterals, shopfronts and brand logos as a freelance designer.
I am a self-motivated individual with a strong sense of initiative. During my internship at Singapore Food Agency (SFA), I assisted the Bioengineering team in conducting genetically modified (GM) food and meat speciation analysis with advanced analytical techniques including gene detection using real-time polymerase chain reaction and next-generation sequencing. Since 2016, I have worked in the F&B industry, including Häagen-Dazs, Wine Connection, banquet dinners at Resorts World Sentosa and Hotel Shangri-La.
I enjoy serving others, enabling them to be the best version of themselves. I was honoured to be a delegate for the Youth Regional Affairs Dialogue (YRAD) 2022, in which I honed my networking and communication skills with other scholars from 20 Southeast Asian countries, many of which I still keep in contact with. My strong communication skills, both verbal and written, allow me to articulate key messages and influence internal and external stakeholders clearly. As a mathematics tutor at Axcell Tuition Centre and an after-school care mentor under YMCA, I was able to deal with problems and deliver lessons under high-stress and at times, volatile circumstances.
I am eager to bring my expertise to your organisation. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further.
Experience
Between May to Aug 2022, I was a Bioengineering Team intern under Singapore Food Agency and I conducted genetically-modified (GM) food and meat speciation analysis with real-time PCR and NGS. I am experienced in tutoring and have worked closely with special-needs children. I was also the lead designer of Nanyang Arts Festival 2019/2020, overseeing the publicity efforts and designing collaterals.
Education
I am a recent graduate and scholar from Nanyang Technological University in partnership with Wageningen University & Research majoring in Chemistry and Food Science (Double major program).
