    What will you be doing?

    This is a senior leadership position within Argus editorial's news organization, overseeing all aspects of our Asian news and analytical output and managing the daily operation of the Asian news desk. The Chief News Editor / Bureau Chief sets the agenda for, and directs coverage of, news and analysis reported from Asia, and also plays a hands-on role in editing and writing news and analysis for online publication. The role also involves responsibility for all staff management and administrative matters relating to the Asian news desk, including recruitment and performance reviews.

    More broadly, the position involves responsibility for the development and execution of:

  • Asian news strategy, including new areas of coverage, in collaboration with Editor-in-Chief and Asian editorial leadership
  • general Argus news policy in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and other regional Chief News Editors
  • news and analysis training programs in collaboration with the Global Editorial Training Manager
  • Specific Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day news operations of Asian news desk
  • Manage and maintain quality and quantity of news and analysis from Asia, ensuring all published news and analysis is clear, accurate and conforms to Argus house style.
  • Play hands-on role in editing of news, analysis and market commentary copy, recognise errors in copy and improve quality as required.
  • Coordinate and contribute to any news or analysis writing from the news desk itself, . general news stories unrelated to specific markets, or geopolitical or investment features required for Argus' Business Intelligence Reports.
  • Help develop and execute long-term news strategy and policy in Asia, including researching of new areas of coverage, in collaboration with Editor-in-Chief and regional editorial leadership.
  • Maintain effective working relationships and communications with Asian market teams, discussing news coverage and commissioning stories as needed, and providing regular, structured feedback to help improve their news writing and news coverage.
  • Maintain effective working relationships and communications with other global news desks and news editors, particularly around handover between editing shifts and stories requiring multi-news desk coordination.
  • Manage staff absences (vacation, sickness) to ensure news desk is adequately staffed at all times
  • Help coordinate Argus staff attendance of relevant and important conferences and other market/industry events, by news desk and by other editorial staff, to ensure we deliver appropriate news coverage.
  • Communicate, implement and otherwise support new editorial and news policy initiatives, including changes to house style, across the Asian editorial team as needed in coordination with the Editor-in-Chief and Asian editorial leadership.
  • Support news and analysis training of Asian editorial staff, including new hires, by participating in and leading training sessions, coordinating with the Global Editorial Training Manager.
  • Liaise effectively with Editor-in-Chief, BIR editors or other senior editorial colleagues to support Asian contribution to special editorial projects, . special reports, election or Cop preview feature series.
  • Attend as needed local and global editors' meetings.
  • What we're looking for in you

  • At least 3-5 years' experience in writing and editing real-time online news on commodity or financial markets.
  • Minimum two years' experience in managing editorial teams, preferably involving management of remote as well as local staff.
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, economics, business, history or relevant field.
  • Demonstrable track record in and commitment to the highest editorial standards with respect to accuracy, deadlines and newsroom ethics
  • Demonstrable goal-oriented collaboration skills, with strong diplomatic and problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrable understanding of commodity or financial markets and the forces affecting them in the 21st century
  • Self-motivated, able to use initiative and equipped with an inquisitive nature.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks on a tight daily deadline.
